Matthews Athletic Recreation Association Hit Hard by Storms, Capital Campaign Seeks Support for Rebuild

Help MARA rebuild after major storm damage

The Matthews Athletic Recreation Association (MARA) is reeling after this week's storms dealt major damage to their beloved park. The organization issued a statement expressing both their immediate concerns and long-term goals for recovery.

"We're heartbroken to see the impact of the storms on our fields," said MARA spokesperson Lauren Benjamin. "The collapse of the light pole on Field 1 is particularly concerning, highlighting the need for critical infrastructure upgrades throughout the park."

While assessing the full extent of the damage is ongoing, MARA officials are already looking ahead to spring and the return of youth sports. Their top priority is ensuring the fields are playable again as soon as possible.

However, the storm has amplified an existing need – the replacement of the park's outdated light poles. "Several of the poles need urgent replacement," a recent Facebook post explained. This, coupled with the recent collapse, underscores the urgency of MARA's ongoing Capital Campaign.

This campaign aims to raise funds for energy-efficient LED lighting throughout the park. Not only will it improve safety and visibility, but the switch to LEDs will also lead to significant long-term energy cost savings.

"We're calling on the community to come together and support our efforts," Lauren Benjamin stated. "With your help, we can not only recover from this setback but also build a better, more sustainable future for MARA and the young athletes who depend on us."

Donations to the MARA Capital Campaign can be made online at https://www.marasports.org/Default.aspx?tabid=1439646. Every contribution, large or small, will be crucial in restoring the park and illuminating the path for future generations of Matthews athletes.
