Successfully transitioning from a food truck to a brick-and-mortar location requires skill, determination, and a setting that reflects the essence of the owners' vision. That's why SkyView22 owners Sharnette and Terrence trusted Fatima Lewis, owner of Sage & Tima Designs, LLC, to create the look and feel of their new restaurant that is a lasting tribute to their son.

SkyView22, is a black-owned restaurant that developed a huge following from its early food truck days. Based on the popularity they garnered from "serving grandma's down home cookin' on the go," Walmart took the unprecedented step of allowing a local restaurant to open within the front entrance of the Callabridge Walmart at 9820 Callabridge Ct., Charlotte, NC 28216.

The design of the 1600-square-foot space with its soaring 13' ceilings was critical to Sharnette and Terrence, who started cooking to cope with the loss of their son at the age of 22, 9 years ago. They wanted SkyView22 to feel comfortable and homey in tribute to him and in keeping with their delicious and comforting soul food menu.

As Fatima explains, "The clients' inspiration for the restaurant and logo is the memory of their son. The design elements were pulled from the blue, black, and white colors in their logo. In addition, the clients enjoy African art. Sage & Tima Designs selected wallpaper and art elements that mimic shapes and designs typically found in mudcloth."

Of course, function drives design, but the commercial dining furniture that includes durable silver metal standard- and bar-height tables and chairs and practical storage doesn't feel like the typical chain you'd expect to find inside a big box retailer. It feels as if grandma's kitchen got a modern update. There's even an Instagram-worthy logo wall that has rapidly become a focal point.

Throughout her design process, Fatima was motivated by bringing the owners' vision and their passion for healing through food to life. "These clients have an amazing story, and we enjoyed helping them continue their journey," she notes.
