Charlotte Mayor Vi Lyles announced Thursday, May 7, 2026, that she will resign from office effective June 30

Charlotte Mayor Vi Lyles announced Thursday, May 7, 2026, that she will resign from office effective June 30, concluding a historic tenure leading the nation’s 14th-largest city. First elected in 2017 and currently serving her fifth term, Lyles said the decision was driven by a desire to spend more time with her grandchildren after decades of public service. In announcing her departure, Lyles reflected on the accomplishments achieved during her administration, including economic growth, neighborhood investment, and navigating the challenges that accompanied Charlotte’s rapid expansion.

Under state law and the City of Charlotte’s governing procedures, the Charlotte City Council will now begin the process of selecting a mayor to complete the remainder of Lyles’ term, which extends through December 2027. Council members are expected to consider and appoint an interim successor after the official resignation, with several current elected officials already being mentioned as potential candidates. The only requirement for the appointment is that the candidate lives in Charlotte and is registered within the same political party as the outgoing Mayor, which is Democratic in this situation. Otherwise, the appointment is made by a majority vote of the City Council.

During July and throughout the process of selecting Charlotte’s next mayor, Mayor Pro Tem James 'Smuggie' Mitchell will serve as Acting Mayor. In this role, Mitchell will help ensure continuity in city operations and leadership while Council works through the formal appointment process to identify and select the city’s next Mayor.
