Networking and Education Series: Breast Cancer Update

Thursday, October 19, 2023 (11:30 AM - 1:00 PM) (EDT)

Description

This October, join us in celebrating Breast Cancer Awareness Month and show your support for the fight against this disease. On October 19th, we are hosting an event to honor those who have faced and continue to face breast cancer.

Our program will dive into several important topics:

  • Breast Cancer Numbers in Our County: We'll provide an update on the current breast cancer figures in our county of Mecklenburg and throughout North Carolina, shedding light on the scale and impact of the disease on our local community.
  • Changes in Screening Recommendations: Understanding the latest screening recommendations can be a lifesaver. We'll walk you through the recent changes in these guidelines to ensure you're informed and prepared.
  • Decades of Success: Looking back at the past two decades, we'll compare data and celebrate the significant progress we've made. We'll highlight how many lives have been saved and the number of cases that have been prevented due to early detection and awareness campaigns.
  • Advances in Treatment: The medical field has seen some incredible advances in the treatment of breast cancer. We'll discuss the successful outcomes that these developments have achieved, including increased longevity and reduced recurrence rates.

Join us on this journey as we delve into these matters, spreading awareness and making a difference in our fight against breast cancer.

Show your solidarity in the fight against breast cancer by wearing pink to our event on October 19th. This small gesture goes a long way in promoting awareness and showing support for those affected by this disease. Your participation in this sea of pink will serve as a beacon of hope, letting those battling breast cancer know that they are not alone and that together, we are stronger.

SPEAKER

Kaitlyn O'Keefe, DO
Oncology Specialists of Charlotte

Dr. O'Keefe's received her Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree from Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine. She then completed her Internal Medicine Residency at Carolinas Medical Center and Hematology/Oncology Fellowship at Atrium Health Levine Cancer Institute. During her fellowship, Dr. O'Keefe was named Chief Fellow.

Cancer affects everyone. It knows no boundaries. Dr. O’Keefe has been personally affected by cancer, losing her mother after a short battle with pancreatic cancer. “I honor her every day in the way I care for my patients. Moments of defeat cannot define you, even in the uncertainty of the future. They can serve as a reminder of what is important to you and what drives you to push forward.” Outside the office, Dr. O'Keefe enjoys spending time with her husband Ryan and extended family including her nieces and nephews, traveling internationally to new places and cultures, and staying active by running, hiking with their dog, and swimming. She is on a quest to become a better cook, become fluent in Spanish, and continue to be active in global medical mission trips in the future.

Dr. O’Keefe wanted to be a doctor since she was in high school learning biology and anatomy. “I remember being curious about different diseases and their possible treatments,” Dr. O’Keefe said. “My interest in Oncology came during my Internal Medicine residency training. Unlike other fields of medicine, Oncology is rapidly changing with new screening techniques, new imaging modalities, and advancements in treatment to include immune-modulating and targeted therapies that can deliver more personalized care to help patients live longer. Most importantly, I wanted to pursue Oncology to take care of this special patient population during the hardest chapter of their lives.”
