Have You Asked AI If It Recommends Your Business?
Have You Asked AI If It Recommends Your Business?
Most small business owners have Googled their company.
You may even regularly check where your business appears for searches like “roofer in Charlotte,” “HVAC repair near me,” or whatever service your company provides.
But have you ever asked ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, or Copilot the same question?
Try this simple experiment.
Open a private or incognito browser window and ask:
“What are the best [your service] companies in [your city]?”
Then ask:
“Which companies would you recommend for [specific service] in [your city]?”
Does your business appear?
If it doesn't, an even more useful question is:
Why were those businesses recommended instead?
AI Is Becoming Another Way People Discover Businesses
Google isn't disappearing. Traditional search engines, Google Maps, reviews, and business websites remain important parts of how consumers research local companies.
But the way people search is expanding.
Instead of typing several searches into Google and opening multiple websites, someone can now ask an AI assistant a much more specific question:
“Who are some reputable roofing companies in Charlotte that handle storm damage?”
Or:
“Find HVAC companies around Salisbury that install heat pumps.”
The AI can provide an answer directly to the user and, depending on the platform and search experience, may search the web and cite sources used to construct that answer.
That creates an important new question for business owners:
Can AI systems find enough information online to understand your business?
Where Does AI Get Information About Your Business?
There isn't one universal “AI ranking,” and different AI platforms don't necessarily produce the same recommendations.
AI systems can draw upon information learned during model training, and some AI experiences can also search or retrieve current information from the web when answering a question.
That means your broader digital presence matters.
An AI system researching a local company may encounter information from sources such as your:
- Business website and individual service pages
- Google Business Profile and other business listings
- Customer reviews
- Local directories
- News articles and press releases
- Professional organizations and associations
- Social profiles
- Other websites that mention or reference your company
Think about what all of those sources collectively say about your business.
Is your location clear?
Are your individual services clearly explained?
Does your website demonstrate actual experience?
Is your company consistently described across the web?
Are other credible websites mentioning your business?
The easier it is to establish clear information about who you are, what you do, where you operate, and what evidence exists about your work, the stronger your overall digital footprint becomes.
Try This Second AI Search
Once you've asked an AI platform for businesses in your industry, don't stop with the initial answer.
Ask:
“Why did you recommend these businesses?”
Then ask:
“What sources did you use? Show me the websites or sources supporting your answer.”
Now you've turned a simple search into research.
Look through the sources. You might find competitors' websites, business profiles, directories, articles, reviews, or other third-party websites.
Then search for your own company.
Ask the AI what it knows about your business, what services it believes you provide, and where it believes you provide them.
Is the information accurate? Is anything important missing?
Google Visibility and AI Visibility Aren't Exactly the Same Thing
Ranking well on Google does not guarantee that every AI platform will recommend your business.
Likewise, appearing in one AI response shouldn't be treated as a permanent ranking.
AI-generated answers can change depending on the platform, the exact question being asked, available sources, current web information, and other factors.
That's why business owners shouldn't think about this as simply “ranking #1 on ChatGPT.”
The larger goal is to build a digital presence that search engines, AI systems, and—most importantly—potential customers can understand and trust.
That means clearly communicating your services, locations, experience, expertise, and reputation across your website and the broader web.
Take Five Minutes and Test Your Business
Open ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, or Copilot and pretend you are a potential customer who has never heard of your company.
Ask for businesses providing your service in your market. Then dig deeper.
Does your business appear?
Which competitors appear?
Why were they recommended?
Which sources were used?
What does the AI know about your company?
Is that information accurate?
Whether you appear or not, you'll probably learn something useful about your company's current digital footprint.
And as AI becomes a larger part of how people research products, services, and local businesses, understanding that footprint is becoming increasingly important.
At Vivid Insights & Marketing, we're helping businesses prepare for that change by bringing together custom web design, traditional SEO, local search optimization, AI search visibility, and conversion strategy.
Because getting found is only part of the equation.
The right customers also need to understand why they should choose you—and have a clear path to becoming a lead.
