Welcome to Matthews HELP Center!
The mission of Matthews HELP Center (MHC) is to provide short-term crisis assistance to our neighbors in the Greater Matthews community.
Our vision is to be the central location in our community where help and resources are provided to those in need. The core values practiced daily by all staff state: in everything we do, we will act with respect, compassion and a determination to improve the quality of life for those we serve.
Centrally located in the Town of Matthews, we serve the following zip code areas:
28104 - Matthews / Stallings
28105 - Matthews
28226 - Charlotte
28270 - Charlotte
28211 - Charlotte
28079 - Indian Trail
Our Services
Service Area: The Matthews HELP Center (MHC) provides assistance to residents in need who live in the following zip codes: 28104/28105 (Matthews/Stallings), 28226, 28270, 28211 (Charlotte), 28079 (Indian Trail).
Food Assistance
MHC provides 3 days’ worth of supplemental staples to eligible households residing within our service area.
Clothing
If there is a need for clothing or household items, clients may be eligible for a voucher to our thrift store. You may need clothes for your child who has hit a growth spurt or interview clothes for a job search.
Transportation
If transportation is a barrier to getting to a new job or necessary appointments, you may be eligible for transportation assistance.
Back to School
Matthews HELP Center, in partnership with Matthews Gives Back, assists with school supplies for local students K-12 in our service area for the new school year.
Holiday Support
Matthews HELP Center, in partnership with Matthews Gives Back, hosts a holiday shopping experience for clients to shop.
Housing and Utility Assistance
In the event of unforeseen financial crisis that prevents you from being able to pay rent or utilities on time, Matthews HELP Center may be able to assist with some or all of a payment.
Backporch Treasures Thrift Boutique
Welcome to Backporch Treasures, a thrift store and so much more!
Shopping with us is a thrifty way to find your treasures and an opportunity to give back to those in need. The revenue generated from your purchases allows The Matthews HELP Center to fulfill our mission to help our local neighbors facing financial hardship.
Many of our customers refer to Backporch Treasures as their "happy place” because the overall atmosphere is inviting—you will immediately see the creativity of our volunteers and feel the positive energy. Our volunteers are incredible and we could not be here without them. Their talent and hard work create a shopping experience.
Whether it be a new outfit, décor for your home, antiques you can only find with us, or books and games for fun family time, Backporch Treasures has it all. Along with gently used items and clothing, you will also find brand new merchandise. All of our items are carefully inspected and priced by our dedicated volunteers. Our Antique and Collectible specialists are both fair to our mission and to our customers. With their pricing skills, you are assured to find a reasonable treasure. Our volunteers work throughout the day to keep our shelves and racks stocked. We also have generous community donors who supply us with food and snack items daily.

Donating for Good!
Cleaning out drawers and other spaces? Consider donating your gently used items to us. We are always in need of quality clothing and household items. Your donations make a difference!
Our receiving drive through area is located next to the garage next to Backporch Treasures Thrift Boutique. You will be greeted and assisted by one of our helpful volunteers.

Items that are dirty, broken, chipped or not in good working order cannot be accepted. We CANNOT accept large furniture. We do not have the storage space. Please see the list of items we can and cannot take. Thank you. Please note, our Summer Donation Drop-Off Hours as of June 1, 2026 - Aug. 31st are from Monday 8 a.m. - noon only, and Tuesdays through Saturdays are from 8 a.m. - 1 p.m.
