Understanding Summer Learning Loss
For over a century, educators have raised concerns about the academic impact of summer break. Research consistently shows that students’ test scores tend to flatten or decline during the summer months, especially in math. However, recent studies suggest that the effects of summer learning loss may vary widely depending on the student, grade level, and type of assessment used.
While the extent of learning loss continues to be debated, one thing is clear: intentional summer learning opportunities can make a difference. High-quality programs that combine structured academic time with engaging enrichment activities that run for at least five weeks with consistent attendance are most effective in supporting student progress.
At Highland Scholars, we believe summer should be a season of growth. Our personalized summer learning programs are designed to keep students on track, engaged, and excited about learning.
The Scottish connection.
I am a Scottish native, born in Glasgow. I have lived and taught in Charlotte's public, charter, and private schools for 19 years. Before that, I taught in Glasgow for 11 years. I have teaching licenses in K-6 education, Special Education, Academically and Intellectually Gifted Education, and a principals license. Scotland has impacted global education, pioneering universal education with its 1696 Act for Settling of Schools. Scottish universities, like the University of Edinburgh, have produced influential thinkers who shaped the Enlightenment. This legacy of accessible, high-quality education continues to influence modern systems worldwide.
Personalized learning and teaching connection.
Personalized learning is crucial for students as it tailors education to each child's unique strengths, needs, and interests. By adapting teaching methods and materials, personalized learning helps students engage more deeply. This approach fosters a love of learning, laying a strong foundation for future academic success and personal growth. This is at the heart of Scottish education.
