First Principles STEM
First Principles Thinking
What is First Principles Thinking? First principles thinking is a problem-solving approach that breaks down complex ideas into their most fundamental truths and then rebuilds solutions from the ground up. Instead of relying on assumptions or conventional wisdom, this method encourages critical thinking, innovation, and a deep understanding of core principles.
At First Principles STEM, we apply this mindset to STEM education—helping students analyze challenges, question existing limitations, and develop creative solutions. By fostering this way of thinking, we empower young minds to become innovators, engineers, and scientists who can tackle real-world problems with confidence and originality.
Our Programs
At First Principles STEM, we offer hands-on, project-based learning experiences that ignite curiosity and build real-world skills in young innovators. Our programs are designed to be fun, challenging, and deeply engaging, with a focus on learning through exploration and problem-solving:
🔧 VEX Robotics
Students design, build, and program competitive robots using VEX platforms. This program fosters teamwork, engineering thinking, and creative problem-solving while preparing students for robotics competitions and real-world tech challenges.
🖨️ 3D Printing
Students learn the fundamentals of digital design and bring their ideas to life using 3D printers. From concept to creation, this program teaches innovation, spatial thinking, and the basics of prototyping and manufacturing.
⚡ Arduino
This hands-on electronics program introduces students to the world of micro controllers and coding. They build interactive projects—like sensors, lights, and simple machines—while learning about circuits, logic, and programming.

Volunteer-PVSA
First Principles is proud to be a certifying organization for the President’s Volunteer Service Award (PVSA), which honors the passion and impact of volunteers in their communities.
About the President’s Volunteer Service Award
In 2003, the President’s Council on Service and Civic Participation founded the President’s Volunteer Service Award to recognize the important role of volunteers in America’s strength and national identity. This award honors individuals whose service positively impacts communities in every corner of the nation and inspires those around them to take action, too.
The PVSA has continued under each administration, honoring the volunteers who are using their time and talents to solve some of the toughest challenges facing our nation.
Led by the AmeriCorps and managed in partnership with Points of Light, this program allows Certifying Organizations to recognize their most exceptional volunteers.

The President’s Volunteer Service Award is on a temporary pause, as decided by AmeriCorps effective May 27, 2025. At this time, orders for awards and applications to become a Certifying Organization are not being accepted.
If there are any questions, please reach out to PVSA@americorps.gov.
Our Mission
First Principles STEM is a nonprofit organization dedicated to inspiring, educating, and empowering young individuals from diverse backgrounds to pursue careers in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). As a 501(c)(3) organization, we apply first principles thinking to cultivate problem-solving skills and a deep understanding of STEM subjects.
Initially focusing on robotics, we provide hands-on educational programs, mentorship opportunities, and resources to support underrepresented groups, including girls, minorities, and economically disadvantaged youth.
Our initiatives include:
- STEM workshops
- Competitions, community engagement, and advocacy for equitable STEM education at local, state, and national levels.
By fostering innovation and research, we aim to develop the next generation of scientists, engineers, and technologists who will drive progress in STEM fields. Through strategic partnerships and impactful programming, First Principles STEM ensures that all students—regardless of background—have access to quality STEM learning opportunities that empower them to succeed in an increasingly technology-driven world.
