What is tactile paving?
What is tactile paving?
Have you ever noticed a series of yellow or black domes in a grid pattern on sidewalks when you are outside crossing the street or boarding a train? These are there to help those living with a visual impairment or blindness to safely navigate their surroundings. These patterns are often in a different color than the sidewalk to provide color contrast to help those living with a visual impairment or blindness to safely navigate their surroundings. For example, the paving notifies a transition from the sidewalk to a roadway.
Lions Services recently set up a booth outside of the Charlotte Government Center with information about mobility cane use and traveling on tactile paving. If you would like to learn more please contact us at info@lionsservices.org Lions Services Inc., is a nonprofit 501c(3) that has been serving the Charlotte community for 88 years providing employment to individuals who are blind or low vision. We also provide orientation and mobility training to employees with blindness or low vision of the entire facility and outside space.
The next time you are out walking and you notice tactile paving just remember it helps those living with visual impairments to safely navigate the area around them.
