Partner with us for National Blood Donor Month

January is National Blood Donor Month and historically one of the worst times of the year to collect blood donations – as cold weather, illness, and varying school schedules affect donor turnout. But the demand for blood stays the same, and families in our communities continue to rely on the generosity of blood donors no matter the time of year.

One donation can save up to three lives.

Each donation can be separated into more than one blood product including, but not limited to, red blood cells, plasma, and platelets, which all have different uses in the medical field.

TBC is your community blood center.

The Blood Connection supplies blood to more than 100 hospital partners across South Carolina, North Carolina, and Georgia.  TBC strives to collect blood donations, processes them, then returns them back to the community they initiated in.  In certain regions, donating with TBC is the only way to ensure your blood donation stays local.

62% of the U.S. population is eligible to donate blood, but only 3% does.

Roughly 205 million individuals are eligible to donate blood, but only 3% of those people do.  If every eligible person donated blood just twice a year, we would never have a blood shortage.

We’re getting hit with a ‘silver tsunami.’ The donor population is aging out.

Roughly 60% of blood donations come from people over 40 years old.  As the donor population ages, new donors are not replacing them at the same rate, leading to a shortage of blood donors.  We find donors often disappear between the ages of 22 and 35.

Someone needs a blood transfusion every 2 seconds.

One in seven people who enter a hospital will require a blood transfusion.

A blood donation takes 45 minutes to an hour of your day, but can mean a lifetime for someone in need.

TBC makes blood donations easy for those interested in donating.  The whole process takes 45 minutes to an hour, and the actual donation takes less than 15 minutes.  People in our community rely on blood donors to ensure those lifesaving blood products are available if and when they need them.
